Analisa Huschle each recorded personal bests to highlight the day of competition for the South Dakota track and field teams at Day 1 of the NCAA West Preliminaries Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Duling (Gregory, S.D.) advanced to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles after setting a school-record in the first round of the event on Friday. Duling ran a personal-best time of 59.26 - placing 20th - to advance to Friday's quarterfinal round. Her time was .53 seconds faster than the record time of 59.79 she set at the Drake Relays in April. The top 12 in the event will qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) had an outstanding effort in the long jump, recording a jump of 19-9 3/4, shattering her previous personal-best by more than seven inches, to take 21st in the preliminaries.
Sophomore Kate Wellensiek (Cook, Neb.) had a good throw in the women's javelin, firing a toss of 139-5 to take 28th.
Junior Casey Shade (Hartford, S.D.) ran a time of 1:51.92 in the 800-meter preliminaries to take 34th. It was the first time Shade had qualified for the event in the west preliminaries. Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) ran a time of 2:12.16 in the women's 800-meter preliminaries as she capped off a brilliant Coyote career.
Freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) fired a throw of 55-1 to tie for 34th in the men's shot put.
Duling and Ladwig were competing for the second straight year at the NCAA West Preliminaries, while Huschle, Wellensiek, Shade and McKelvey were making their first appearances.
The following individuals will compete Friday for the Coyotes: senior Jasmine Mosley (discus), who competed in the shot put on Thursday; Duling (100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles), sophomore Jeff Mettler (3,000-meter steeplechase) and sophomore Bethany Buell and freshman Emily Grove (pole vault).
