SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—A pair of newcomers paced South Dakota cross country teams at the Augustana Twilight held at Yankton Trail Park Friday night. The Coyotes sent a limited squad to Sioux Falls with another race on tap next week in Brookings.
Freshman
Madison Brouwer, a native of Sibley, Iowa, placed eighth in her collegiate debut to headline the Coyote women. She crossed the finish line in 17:52.97. Her mark is the 10th fastest by a Coyote since Yankton Trail Park was extended to the 5,000-meter distance in 2017.
Sophomore transfer
Carson Lauterbach out of Northwest Missouri State paced the men's squad in his first race as a Coyote. Originally of Lincoln, Nebraska, Lauterbach completed the four-mile course in 20:51.70 for 65th place.
Brouwer was one of three freshmen to find their way into the women's scoring five. Freshman Alexi Pagel was second on the team in 47th place overall with a time of 19:05.39. Freshman
Moriah Knapp was the fourth Coyote finisher and 58th overall in 19:1149.
Fourth-year junior
Abbie Schmidt and fifth-year senior
Haley Miller rounded out the scorers on Friday night. Schmidt was the third Coyote across the line and 53rd overall in 19:07.70. Miller was USD's fifth finisher and 62nd in the field in 19:17.60.
The women's sixth and seventh finishers were sophomore
Maci Steuber in 19:28.29 and
Renee Thompson in 19:35.46. USD finished seventh in the women's team race with 198 points with Nebraska taking the women's team title.
Behind Lauterbach in the men's race was South Dakota's Summit League Runner to Watch
Riley Ruhaak. The junior clocked 21:25.33 for four miles and 108th place.
Freshmen
Trevor Hiatt and
Grant Dixon crossed the line together in 120th and 121st place. Hiatt clocked 21:34.30 to Dixon's 21:34.65. Senior
John Swotek capped off the scoring five in 129th place with a time of 21:43.41.
South Dakota's small squad finished 14th in the men's team race with 412 points. The meet title was captured by South Dakota State.
The Coyotes will get an early look at the Summit League Championship course next Friday. South Dakota travels to Brookings, South Dakota, for the SDSU Classic beginning at 6 p.m.
