VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota captured 15 events Saturday to cap off the weekend at the USD Early Bird held at Lillibridge Track Complex.
Sophomore
Bennett Schwenn jumped more than a foot past his previous outdoor best to win the men's long jump with a personal record of 25-1 ¾ (7.66m). His wind-legal mark is less than an inch off the Summit-leading jump and ranks 22nd in the nation. Freshman
Carsen Staehr also leaped a personal record of 24-1 ½ (7.35m), moving to third in the Summit standings.
Senior
Erin Kinney clocked a wind-aided 11.22 seconds (+5.3 m/s) to win the women's 100 meter race. At the USD Early Bird a year ago, Kinney clocked a wind-aided 10.98 seconds. She owns USD's school record in the event with a wind-legal time of 11.28 seconds. Senior
Jacy Pulse finished third in the 100 meters with a wind-aided time of 11.66 seconds.
Fifth-year senior
Ardell Inlay swept the men's 100 and 200 meters on Saturday. He captured the men's 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.30 seconds (+4.7 m/s), while fellow fifth-year senior
Dylan Kautz finished second in a wind-aided 10.39 seconds. Inlay went on to complete the double with a 200-meter win in a wind-legal 21.65 seconds.
Fourth-year junior
Sara Reifenrath improved her season best in the 200 meters, winning the event with a clocking of 23.95 seconds. She moved to second in the Summit League standings.
South Dakota battled through the wind to sweep the men's and women's 4x100 relays. Kinney, Pulse, junior
Averi Schmeichel and Reifenrath combined for a time of 45.44 seconds. Senior
Johnson Adegbite, junior
Ken-Mark Minkovski, Inlay and Kautz clocked a season-best 40.79 seconds in the 4x100 relay. The time is second-best in the Summit by four-hundredths of a second.
Schmeichel added a win in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.83 seconds.
Fifth-year senior
Meredith Clark opened the morning by winning the shot put in 50-5 ½ (15.38m), while sophomore
Kinsley Ragland took fifth in the event.
Lydia Knapp, who's redshirting the outdoor season, won the hammer throw in 198-1 (60.39m) while competing unattached. Clark finished runner-up with a personal best of 192-7 (58.71m) and junior
Delaney Smith took third in a personal best 183-6 (55.93m). Clark moves to third all-time in USD history with the mark and Smith improves to fifth on the Coyote Top 10.
Junior
Anna Robinson captured the women's 400 meters with a time of 57.94 seconds with classmate
Caelyn Valandra-Prue finishing runner-up in 59.41 seconds.
Valandra-Prue was joined by Schmeichel, sophomore
Bre Dunn and Reifenrath on the winning 4x400-meter relay. The quartet clocked a time of 3:59.46 while battling through 55-mile-per-hour wind gusts.
Redshirt-sophomore
Mason Sindelar competed the 800-meter and 1500-meter sweep with a Saturday afternoon win in the 800 meters. He came out on top with a winning time of 1:58.11.
On the women's side, fifth-year seniors
Madison Jochum and
Ella Byers placed second and third, respectively, in the 800 meters. Jochum clocked 2:21.01 and Byers finished in 2:21.60. Byers was the women's 1,500-meter winner on Friday.
The top collegiate finisher in the men's high jump, junior
Joe Lynch finished second overall with a clearance of 6-8 ¾ (2.05m). Sophomore
Landon Olson tied for third and senior
Ethan Heitman tied for fifth with both clearing 6-4 ¾ (1.95m).
The premier sections of the women's and men's pole vault competitions were contested inside the DakotaDome late Saturday afternoon due to the hazardous wind conditions outdoors at Lillibridge Track Complex. Coyote alumna Emily Grove won the competition with a clearance of 14-9 (4.50m). Senior
Gen Hirata and
Marleen Mülla, who competed unattached while redshirting this outdoor season, tied for second with a height of 14-3 ¼ (4.35m). It marks Hirata's second-straight week of vaulting past 14 feet. Seniors
Eerik Haamer and
Marshall Faurot tied for the win on the men's side with both clearing 17-3 (5.26m). Junior
Spencer Buley took third with a make of 16-11 (5.16m).
Sophomore
Mikael Grace took second place in the men's 110-meter hurdle finals with a wind-aided time of 14.34 seconds (+4.7 m/s).
Junior Tommy Nikkel finished runner-up in the men's 400 meters with a time of 49.14 seconds.
Junior
Lauren Meyer led the Coyotes in the horizontal jumps with a pair of season bests. She leaped a season-best 17-10 ¼ (5.44m) for third place in the long jump and a season-best 38-0 ¾ (11.60m) for fourth in the triple.
Staehr followed up his personal record in the long jump with a third-palce finish in the triple jump. He leaped 45-11 ¼ (14.00m) to wrap up the meet. Junior
Jayden Green was fourth in the competition with a mark of 45-9 ¼ (13.95m).
Junior
Wyatt Pruce placed fourth in the discus with a throw o4 148-8 (45.32m).
South Dakota stays home to compete on back-to-back weekends. The South Dakota Challenge is scheduled for next Saturday, April 13, at Lillibridge Track Complex in Vermillion.
