IOWA CITY, Iowa--Aaron White's 21 points led four Iowa players in double figures as the Hawkeyes beat South Dakota 87-63 Tuesday night from Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the first meeting between the two programs since the 1964-65 season.
Roy Devyn Marble scored 14 points, Mike Gesell had 12 and Adam Woodbury had 10 for the Hawks (7-2), which used a 50-31 edge on the boards to put away their under-sized opponent. Iowa used 20 offensive rebounds to net 24 second-chance points.
Trevor Gruis had 16 points and Casey Kasperbauer added 14 for the Coyotes (4-5), which fell to 0-11 all-time against Iowa. Kasperbauer made four of South Dakota's nine three-pointers. Iowa was 2-of-16 from behind the arc, including an 0-for-7 effort in the first half.
South Dakota took its first and only lead at 25-24 following a Karim Rowson free throw with just under eight minutes to go in the first half. Gesell scored eight points during a 21-7 Iowa run to close the first half and the Hawks took a 45-32 lead into the break.
The Coyotes got within 10 following Kasperbauer's third trey of the game early in the second half. A 12-3 Iowa run began with back-to-back hoops by Anthony Clemmons and the Hawks maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
USD head coach Dave Boots post-game quotes:
Opening Statement:
I thought we played good basketball through a lot of it. Once again, physically we just got beat up a little bit. We just have no answer for it. We got pounded on the boards again tonight against a stronger and bigger team. We were unable to get good contact and block out. We get out of sync too many stretches in the game. We made more mistakes than the two games we played last week at home. I thought our guys competed. Physically, we are trying. We made some good plays. When we ran our offense, I thought we got quality shots. We were able to get the ball inside.
On rebounding:
We still need to compete on every possession. They're going to get some, with their size and quickness there's no question about it. I know we can a better job. We have to get on the road and play better than we are.
On shooting...
We had some good looks. Casey (Kasperbauer) and Jordan (Boots) played a solid two spot. We got nice production out of that two spot tonight. Trevor (Gruis) did a nice job inside. We got some nice looks there in the second half. We need to do that consistently through the game. Our movement lacks a little bit. There was certainly a lot more encouraging things to build on.
