Jasmine Mosley set a new school record in discus at the Kansas Relays to lead the way for the South Dakota track and field teams during competition Saturday. Saturday's events capped off a busy weekend of competition for the Coyote teams.
At the Long Beach State Invite in Norwalk, Calif., Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) cleared a pole vault height of 14-3 1/2 - topping her previous school record and personal best by one inch - to win the event. The height was also a meet record. That height ranks her third in the nation and is just a half-inch away from second.
Earlier in the day, in windy conditions, Buell jumped 13-1 1/2 at the Mt. SAC Relays but easily surpassed that mark at Long Beach.
Also at Long Beach, senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) was second in her section of the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.70. Junior Megan Meyer (Bismarck, N.D.) won Flight 2 of the women's pole vault with a personal best of 12-10 1/4, while freshman Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) was third in that flight at 12-4 1/2. Freshman Rachel Weinandt (Yankton, S.D.) ran a personal-best of 2:15.25 to take third in her section of the 800 meters.
Freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) won her section of the 200 meters with a time of 24.33
At the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan., Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) set the new school discus record with a throw of 165-9, breaking the previous record of 163-8 set by Heather Andrews in 1991. Mosley's throw, a personal-best by nearly five feet, is 44th-best in the country. She was also 11th in the hammer throw at 169-11. Mosley set the school outdoor shot put record on Friday.
The Coyote women's 4x880 relay team was second with a time of 9:25.13. That consisted of freshman Kristie Mullen, sophomore Ashleigh Giese (Marshall, Wis.), junior Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.) and sophomore Britni Waller (Lincoln, Neb.).
South Dakota's sprint medley was sixth at 4:21.12. That consisted of senior Brittany Chambers (Orangevale, Calif.), freshman Molly Ervin (Sioux Falls, S.D.), sophomore Anna Hyronimus (Brandon, S.D.) and senior Natalie Newman (Overland Park, Kan.).
Sophomore Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) was fourth in the men's seeded 1,500 meters at 3:54.07, just .62 seconds away from a personal best in the event. South Dakota's sprint medley relay was third at 3:29.23; that consisted of junior Brandon Kovash (Harrisburg, S.D.), senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa), freshman Lukas Bernard (Watertown, S.D.) and sophomore Travis Brenner (Yankton, S.D.).
The Coyotes will send a contingent of athletes to the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton, S.D., on Tuesday before competing at the prestigious Drake Relays starting Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.
