YANKTON, S.D. - Led by a strong performance by junior
Kyle Ballew in the pole vault, the South Dakota track and field teams recorded several personal-bests during competition at the Mount Marty Twilight Meet, which was held Tuesday at Williams Field in Yankton, S.D.
Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) won the men's pole vault with an effort of 17-5 - which is a personal-best and a mark that is ranked tied for 21st in the nation and 14th in the West Region.
Several Coyotes enjoyed good showings in the warm 80-degree weather.
Sophomore Travis Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) won the men's 800 meters with a personal-best of 1:52.05, besting his previous time by more than two seconds. Brenner won the competitive race by .08 seconds.
Senior Tyler Maxwell (Tekamah, Neb.) set a personal-best of 194-7 in winning the javelin. That topped his previous personal best by nearly 10 feet.
Senior Kyle Wheeler (Omaha, Neb.) won the discus at 154-11, while junior Benson Langat (Kapsabet, Kenya) won the 5,000 meters at 15:51.85. Junior Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) placed second in the 1,500 meters with a personal-best of 3:55.87.
For the Coyote women, sophomore Kate Wellensiek (Cook, Neb.) won two events. She captured the hammer throw with a personal-best of 164-9, and added a win in the javelin at 136-2. Wellensiek's hammer throw was a personal best by more than seven feet.
Freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) won the long jump at 18-5. Senior Brittany Chambers (Orangevale, Calif.) won the 400-meter dash at 58.26, just .16 seconds away from a personal best. Junior Megan Meyer (Bismarck, N.D.) continued her strong season with a win in the pole vault at 12-5 1/2.
Junior Jessica Brandli (Rapid City, S.D.) ran 4:45.85 in the women's 1,500 meters to take second and set a personal-best in the event. Freshman Ellysa Reinke (New Prague, Minn.) won the discus at 115-9.
The Coyotes will next send a group of athletes to the prestigious Drake Relays, which start Wednesday with heptathlon competition in Des Moines, Iowa.
