VERMILLION, S.D.--South Dakota track and field hosts the USD Open, softball heads south for the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament and women's basketball plays at Oakland and at Fort Wayne this week in Coyote athletics.

USD track and field will play host to North Dakota, South Dakota State, Augustana (S.D.), Sioux Falls and Wayne State (Neb.) at the USD Open. Field events will start at 4:30 p.m. with running events following at 6 p.m.

The track team split up between the Iowa State Classic and the Dordt Invitational on Saturday. Megan Glisar, Bethany Buell and Jeff Mettler all broke their own school records while winning their respective events at the Iowa State Classic. Glisar cleared 5-10 1/2 in the high jump, Mettler ran the 3,000-meters in 8:09.82 and Buell cleared 14-2 in the pole vault. All three are season-bests in the Summit League, while Buell's height is third nationally.

Coyote softball (2-3, 0-0 Summit) is riding a two-game winning streak heading into the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament in Hammond, La. USD beat both Idaho State and Utah State 5-4 on Sunday in two games that came down to the last at bat. USD entered the bottom of the seventh tied 4-4 with ISU when Christine Broders hit a walk-off home run. In the day's second contest, Utah State had the bases loaded but freshman pitcher Madison Frain was able to strike out the game's final batter to seal the victory.

USD will open the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament with two games on Friday, the first at 3 p.m. against the tournament host, Southeastern Louisiana, and a 5:30 p.m. contest with Texas Southern. The `Yotes will play five games over the three-day tournament.

Women's basketball has road games against Oakland (Thursday, 5:30 p.m.) and Fort Wayne (Saturday, 1 p.m.). The Coyotes are coming off a 67-45 home win over Kansas City on Saturday. Tempestt Wilson led all scorers with 18 points while the bench combined for 31 points, with 13 of those coming from Margaret McCloud and 11 from Heidi Hoff.

Men's basketball (8-16, 4-8 SL) hosts Oakland (Thursday, 7 p.m.) and Fort Wayne (Saturday, 7 p.m.). Trevor Gruis led the Coyotes with 17 points and five rebounds in an 80-65 loss at Kansas City on Saturday.

The Coyotes won the previous meeting with Oakland 97-78 in Rochester, Mich., on Jan. 19 behind freshman guard Casey Kasperbauer's career-high 23 points. Juevol Myles, Brandon Bos, Gruis, Jordan Boots and Karim Rowson all scored in double figues.

Swimming and diving has the week off before competing in the Summit League Championships starting Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in Rochester, Mich. Head coach Jason Mahowald sent a small contingent of women to the Minnesota Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday and Saturday, where two relay teams finished in the top-three, including an 800-yard freestyle relay team of Lydia Engberg, Stacie Kjelden, Miranda Vlach-Buller and Charlotte Yaw (8:26.35) and a 400 free relay comprised of Yaw, Rachel Kranda, Stephanie Goddard, and Engberg (3:47.13).

Women's tennis matched up with UTEP and Illinois-Chicago in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The Coyotes were defeated 4-3 by UTEP and 7-0 by Illinois-Chicago. Hafsa Laraibi, Veronika Makashov and Yamini Reddy all earned victories against the Miners.
