2016 Drake Relays Thursday Results
DES MOINES, Iowa—South Dakota senior
Katie Wetzstein raced to a first-place finish in the distance carnival 800 meters at the 107th annual Drake Relays in Drake Stadium.
Wetzstein clocked 2 minutes, 8.94 seconds for the second-fastest time in USD program history. Wetzstein's time is a second off Emma (Erickson) Ladwig's school record 2:07.26 set in 2010. In the NCAA West Region, Wetzstein ranks 38th in the 1,500 meters and 51st in the 800 meters.
Drake Relays defending champion in the 10,000 meters, senior
Kelsey Barrett placed fourth overall Thursday after crossing the line in 34:57.79. The time is the second-fastest of Barrett's career behind her winning time of 34:54.45 from 2015. Competing unattached, Melissa Dock won the race in 34:41.83. Dock surged at the 6,000-meter mark to pull away from the lead pack. Barrett was the second collegiate across the finish line and the time moves her to 41st in the NCAA West Region.
Also racing in the women's 10,000 meters, sophomore
Bailey Oettel finished 12th and freshman
Megan Billington took 25th. Oettel ran a 30-second personal best of 35:45.52. Billington finished in 37:05.17.
Senior
Mubarik Musa placed fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:18.34. After a slower first lap, Musa ran an evenly paced race between 70 and 72 seconds per lap. Musa's 10,000 time of 29:42.32 from the Mt. SAC Relays ranks 43rd in the NCAA West.
The women's 4x1,600 relay took seventh in 20:18.85. Sophomore
Lindsay Joyce led off with a split of 4:54 and junior
Jessica Feldman took the second leg in 5:04. Freshmen
Liz Bohn and
Madeline Huglen finished off the relay by each running 5:09 splits. The relay clocked the third-fastest time in USD program history, behind the marks set in 2014 and 2015.
The men's 4x1,600 relay finished 10th with a 17:26.19 clocking. Senior
Isaac Allen took the first leg out with a 4:18 split. Redshirt-junior
Mach Dojiok ran the second leg in 4:23 and freshman
Nate Wendt ran 4:20 in the third leg. Freshman
Jacob Simmons anchored the relay with a 4:23 split. The time is the fifth-fastest run by a Coyote relay in history.
