Mettler Claims Steeplechase Title With Record Time; Coyote Women 2nd, Men 5th After Day 2 of Summit League Outdoor Championships

FARGO, N.D. - Sophomore Jeff Mettler won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to pace the South Dakota track and field teams at Day 2 of the Summit League Outdoor Championships Friday in Fargo, N.D. The Coyote women are in second with 62 points with nine events in the books, while the men are in fifth (41.5 points) but are just 6.5 points out of third with eight events scored.

Mettler (Eureka, S.D.) became the Coyotes' second individual champion of the week with his win in the steeplechase. He set a new meet record with a time of 9:01.85, shattering a record of 9:05.19 that had stood since 1983. Mettler won Friday's race by more than 11 seconds.

Also for the Coyote men, freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) had a good showing in the shot put, taking second at 54-9. Sophomore teammate Cody Snyder (Lake Andes, S.D.) was seventh at 50-6.

Sophomore Adam Mikkelson (Gregory, S.D.) was fifth in the high jump with a height of 6-5, with freshman Jeff O'Connell (Philip, S.D.) tying for seventh at 6-1 1/4. Senior Tanner Willard (Belle Fourche, S.D.) was sixth in the men's decathlon with a personal-best score of 5,475 points.

The Coyotes had two individual score points in the long jump, as senior Chad Pinkelman (Norfolk, Neb.) was seventh at 23-2, with O'Connell taking eighth at 22-11 1/4.

Leading the way for the Coyote women Friday was freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.), who was second in the long jump at 19-1 1/2, with senior teammate Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) taking seventh at 18-0 1/2.

Senior Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) was third in the shot put at 50-0, with senior Darci Schwartz (McCook Lake, S.D.) taking seventh at 45-4. Sophomore Tansha Clarke (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished fourth in the women's heptathlon at 4,492 points. Junior Carol Miller (Mead, Neb.) finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:15.54, which was a personal-best time by nearly four seconds.

Preliminaries Several events held their preliminary rounds on Friday with the Coyotes recording several good performances.

Huschle ran the second-fastest time in the 100-meter preliminaries at 12.04, with junior Gabriel Williams (Sioux City, Iowa) running the fourth-fastest time at 12.01. Huschle also qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash at 24.89, which was the fifth-best time.

Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) ran the second-fastest time in the 800-meter run at 2:14.52, just .01 seconds behind NDSU's Brittany Schanandore.

Junior Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.) had the third-fastest time (14.02) in the 100-meter hurdle prelims, which was her personal-best time in the event. Freshman Tricia Watson (Watertown, S.D.) also qualified for the finals in the event with a 15.32 time.

Junior Ashley Sveum (Eau Claire, Wis.) had a good run in the 400-meter dash preliminaries, tying for third with a time of 56.62.

For the men, senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa) qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 200 meters. Clement ran the third-best time in the 200 meter prelims (21.94) and the fifth-best time in the 100-meter dash prelims (10.88). Junior Michael Burrus (Papillion, Neb.) qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash at 11.01.

Junior Casey Shade (Hartford, S.D.) qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash at 48.86 (fourth-fastest time) and did the same in the 800-meter run (1:54.40, sixth-fastest). Sophomore Travis Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) also qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run at 1:54.07 (seventh).

Freshman Erik Hill (Tea, S.D.) qualified for the finals in both hurdle events. He ran the fourth-fastest time in the 400-meter hurdle prelims (54.69) and the eighth-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles (15.31).

The final day of competition is set for Saturday in Fargo. Field events are slated to start at 10 a.m. with the running events - which are finals in all events - beginning at 12:20 p.m.
