DES MOINES, Iowa - The South Dakota men's 4x1,600 relay set a school record to lead the Coyote track and field teams in competition Friday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. It's the second straight day a Coyote relay has set a school record at the meet.

The Coyotes' 4x1,600 relay set a school record and was in contention for the win for much of the race. That group, which ran a time of 16:59.62, consisted of sophomore Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.), sophomore Travis Brenner (Yankton, S.D.), junior Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) and sophomore Jacob Evenson (Sioux Center, Iowa). Brenner ran the fastest split of the group at 4:07.

Freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) was 11th in the men's shot put at 55-5 1/2.

Several Coyote women had good showings in Friday's competition. Sophomore Bethany Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) tied for sixth in the pole vault at 12-7 1/2, with freshman Emily Grove (Pontiac, Ill.) tying for eighth, also at 12-7 1/2.

Facing a strong headwind, freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) ran a 12.27 in the 100-meter dash preliminaries, taking 15th - ahead of runners from Alabama, Arkansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) finished 10th in the 800-meter run at 2:09.09. Senior Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) threw a 49-10 1/2 to take 18th in the women's shot put.

The Coyotes' 4x400 relay was 16th at 3:47.47. That consisted of junior Ashley Sveum (Eau Claire, Wis.), junior Alexa Duling (Gregory, S.D.), Huschle and Ladwig. South Dakota's women's 4x100 relay was 13th at 47.65. That consisted of Huschle, Duling, Ladwig and junior Gabriel Williams (Sioux City, Iowa).

The Coyote men's 4x100 relay was 15th at 42.16, which is a season-best. That consisted of senior Tim Brown (Rapid City, S.D.), junior Brandon Kovash (Harrisburg, S.D.), senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa) and sophomore Jordan Schumacher (Rapid City, S.D.).

The Drake Relays wrap up Saturday in Des Moines.
