South Dakota Track and Field Sweeps SDSU and UND in Double Dual; Snyder and McKelvey Set School Records

YANKTON, S.D. - The South Dakota track and field teams swept rivals South Dakota State and North Dakota in a double dual held Friday at Williams Field in Yankton, S.D. The Coyote men and women topped South Dakota State, 224-156 and North Dakota, 256-108.

The Coyote teams competed in a dual (women's and men's) against SDSU and North Dakota; a combined dual score was accumulated to determine the overall score. It is the second straight year the Coyotes have swept the meet.

Sophomore Cody Snyder (Lake Andes, S.D.) and freshman Kyle McKelvey (Beresford, S.D.) each set school outdoor records to pace the Coyote men. Snyder fired a personal-best throw of 186-8 to win the discus, setting a new school and state record in the process. His throw broke a previous school record that had stood for 27 years set by Todd Pharis (173-7) in 1985. Snyder's throw is ranked 10th in the nation and best in the Summit League by more than 20 feet.

McKelvey set a new outdoor school record in the shot put with a throw of 58-10 3/4, topping a record that was set by Steve Schmidt (58-9 1/4) in 2000. McKelvey's throw is ranked 17th in the nation and best in the Summit League this year.

Junior Casey Shade (Hartford, S.D.) was a multi-event winner for the Coyote men. He captured the 400-meter dash at 48.65 and also won the 800-mter run at 1:55.02.

Sophomore Travis Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) won the 1,500 meters at 4:01.72, while junior Ethan Marquardt (Albert Lea, Minn.) won the 5,000 meters at 15:26.05, just .01 seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Jeff Mettler (Eureka, S.D.).

Junior Kyle Ballew (West Hills, Calif.) won the pole vault at 16-6 3/4, while senior Tyler Maxwell (Tekamah, Neb.) won the javelin throw with a mark of 185-8, fourth-best in the Summit League this year. Senior Jared Clement (Le Mars, Iowa) was victorious in the 100-meter dash at 10.86.

For the Coyote women, freshman Analisa Huschle (Bagley, Minn.) had an excellent day, winning three events. She won the 100-meter dash at 11.75, the 200-meter dash at 24.27 and the long jump at 18-9. Her time in the 200 meters was a personal best.

Senior Emma Ladwig (Gayville, S.D.) also had a strong day, winning the 400-meter dash (56.25) and the 800-meter run (2:15.11). Junior Alexa Duling swept the hurdle events, taking the 100-meter hurdles at 13.90 and the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.36.

Junior Jessica Brandli (Rapid City, S.D.) won the 5,000 meters at 18:14.78, while sophomore Bethany Buell (St. Louis, Mo.) captured the pole vault with a height of 13-5 1/4. Senior Kenna Wolter (Santa Maria, Calif.) won the triple jump at 38-3 1/2. Sophomore Kate Wellensiek (Cook, Neb.) won the javelin at 129-11.

Next action for the Coyote teams is the Sioux City Relays on April 13-14.
