In the proud history of South Dakota football, just one team, the 1902 squad, had an unbeaten and untied season. That performance ranks among the greatest accomplishments in Coyote sports history. Coached by A.H. "Buck" Whittemore (member of the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame), the 1902 squad had a 9-0 mark and even more impressively did not permit a single point to an opponent all season. The Coyotes defeated Sioux Falls, 33-0; Yankton, 35-0; Omaha Medics, 12-0; South Dakota Tech, 23-0; Yankton, 23-0; Omaha Medics, 35-0; South Dakota State, 10-0; and Morningside, 5-0. Behind the leadership of Whittemore, USD scored 204 points or 22.4 per game, which was also its average margin of victory.
