Sterling and twin brother, Stanley Clark, were standouts on South Dakota track and field teams that dominated the North Central Conference in early to mid-1920s. Sterling, who won letters from 1922-26, won North Central Conference titles in the 100-meter dash, 1922 (10.2) and 1923 (10.0). All four years that Sterling Clark competed on the team, the Coyotes won the NCC track championship (1922, 1923, 1925, and 1926). He helped South Dakota win the first ever NCC title in 1922. He was a member of the record setting mile relay team, which set an all-time state record (3:27.2). He also established records in both the all-time 100 and 200 records. After leaving USD, he praticed law in Clark from 1927-36 before being appointed assistant attorney general in 1938. In June of 1941, he served in the U.S. Army (in Tunisia and Maples). After returning home, he formed a law partnership with R.A. Smiley in Belle Fourche.
