Tom Engleman, a native of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, ranks as one of the best all-time quarterbacks in South Dakota football history. He played quarterback for the Coyotes from 1969 to 1972 and led the team to the 1972 NCC title with a 9-1 overall record.

The 1972 NCC title season saw the Coyotes go 9-1 (6-1 NCC) and finishing T1st in the league under Hall of Fame coach Joe Salem. It was the first NCC title for South Dakota since the 1951 season and sixth up to that point, starting a three-year run as NCC champions (1972-74) under Salem. 

A very good passer and runner on the option, Engleman established the then USD career records for yards passing (3,567) and yards total offense (4,097). He completed 213 of 563 passes with 24 touchdowns in his Coyote career.
